WASHINGTON — A Navy missile soaring 130 miles above the Pacific smashed a dying and potentially deadly U.S. spy satellite and probably destroyed a tank carrying 1,000 pounds of toxic fuel, officials said.

I kinda wonder if this is just a ploy by the US to show the Chinese that they also have the ability to shoot down and destroy satellites. It comes awfully quick after the Chinese destroyed one of their own, you know simply to send a message.
Ah, but Ron Reagan must be smiling down from heaven on this scene. Take this as some vindication for the sci-fi missle defense derisively referred to as "Star Wars."
Obviously, the US did this in this manner to make a statement and a big show. Most likely, this crippled satellite was a fairly easy layup. They could have done it quietly, but hey people, here's just a little hint of what we can do.
Perhaps there are people seeing this who might then wisely change their mind about monkeying with US. This little display might save US having to kill some folk.

I'm glad the satellite is no longer a threat (assuming the government propaganda is true), but I'm a little more concerned about our reaction to it.
Does it seem to anyone else that Bush is a little too excited to shoot things?
