Court Overturns Tory MP - Rob Anders Nomination

An Alberta judge has overturned the controversial acclamation of Calgary Conservative Member of Parliament, Rob Anders. A new nomination meeting has been ordered in the matter.

Court of Queen's Bench Justice Jed Hawco issued a court order instructing the Conservative Party of Canada to restart the nomination process in Calgary West.

Buckdog has been following this case for months. Here are some older Buckdog posts concerning Stephen Harper's interference in the nomination process.

Hey Leftdog ;)...some of your recent posts are missing a "comments" option.

Excuse me if that was intentional, just thought I'd give you a heads up in case it wasn't.

Thanks NYM! No it was not intentional. My ebblogger has been a bit wonky lately! thanks!

Congrats, Dawg! Score one for the good guys.

I hope this means the end of the Anders era in Calgary West. Since it's a foregone conclusion that the Conservatives will as usual win every riding in this city, my only hope is that Anders' replacement will be someone who is less arrogant and less right-wing.

But Harper wants Anders to run and will likely use whatever influence he has as leader of the party to ensure that Rob gets to run.

They sat together as Reform Members of Parliament and before that, when both were simple right wing lobbyists, they worked closely together.

I would not count Anders out yet. The good news is that the upcoming nomination process will be very high profile which should prevent blatant shenaningans by the Prime Minister.

I've been working diligently over the last year to run an Independent campaign in Calgary-West the moment the writ is dropped. We'll see what I can do from the election standpoint, assuming he wins his nomination like usual...

The blatant shenanigans have already begun. The Cons have already announced that they are going to ask for an emergency stay of the judge's decision in light of a probable election call.

Mr. Schmidt: Any voter is going to ask two things - who are you? and what do you represent?

and I'm happy to answer both questions. I go into detail on my website, but I'm keeping it locked down until the writ is issued. But for now, I can at least give you a general idea.

My political career has seen me run a non-partisan website aimed at being a general resource area for voters, called OurVote.ca, which ran for two consecutive Federal elections. I also ran a campaign for a candidate in the 2004 provincial. I am a mathematician and computer enthusiast outside of politics.

What I stand for obviously depends on the issue, but in general I tend to be a social liberal but a fiscal conservative.

I don't want to take up more comment space on the weblog here as a 'campaign space', but I will have everything else on the website at kirkschmidt.ca when the writ drops, and I'm happy to answer any questions via email as well (and if you're fine with me answering more here, too, I can do that.)
