When our American friends go to the polls on Tuesday, most people will be watching the House races for the Senate and Congress. But there will be a lot of other races underway and one of the most colourful is the race for Governor of Texas.

My Democratic friends will likely not agree with me, but if I lived in Texas, I think I might be voting 'Kinky Freidman' for Governor on Tuesday. Why the hell not? With no real funds and using an internet based campaign, this guy has worked tirelessly to get his message out there. h

Just take a look at where he is on the issues and tell me this old Jewish Cowboy is NOT progressive!

Where is Kinky on the issues and positions?
- On education, he supports higher pay for teachers and working to lower Texas' dropout rate, which is the highest in the nation.

- He supports more investment in harnessing Texas' alternative fuel resources such as wind and biodiesel,

- Kinky is opposed to toll road construction. He feels that the TTC is a land grab of the ugliest kind, with land being taken from hard-working ranchers and farmers in little towns and villages all over Texas.

-On the death penalty, he summed up his position, "The system is not perfect. Until it's perfect, let's do away with the death penalty".

- On social issues he has supported gay marriage, answering an Associated Press reporter's question on the subject on Feb. 3, 2005, "I support gay marriage. I believe they have a right to be as miserable as the rest of us"

- Friedman supports the decriminalization of marijuana, though he doesn't advocate making its sale legal. "I'm not talking about like Amsterdam," he's noted, "We've got to clear some of the room out of the prisons so we can put the bad guys in there, like the pedophiles and the politicians".

- Legalizing casino gambling as in Canada to bring in revenue for increased education spending.

-Closing corporate loopholes so that the 10,000 Texas businesses that are not currently paying taxes will be paying taxes.

-Establish the Texas Peace Corps, which would mobilize retirees, musicians, celebrities, and members of the community to volunteer in schools across Texas. This program would allow these volunteers to 'share their wisdom and love' by teaching music, the arts and shop in the public schools on a volunteer basis.
