I Want To Be A Member Of 'The Democratic Party Of Canada'
I want to be a member of the Democratic Party of Canada.
When the old CCF (Cooperative Commonwealth Federation) merged with the Canadian Labour Congress to form the New Democratic Party, their vision was for a 'new' democracy in Canada. The 'new' did not refer to the freshness of the new party but rather the vision of a truly democratic Canada - one without the APPOINTED, patronage ridden Senate.
Over the years, innumerable pundits referred to us as 'the NDP party'. I have always preferred being called a 'new democrat' as opposed to an 'ndp'er'.
I strongly urge delegates to the upcoming convention of the New Democratic Party to revise our moniker and support renaming our movement to The Democratic Party of Canada!
We are the only party that has it right concerning our ridiculous Senate (be it elected or unelected). Our unelected Senate is the historical tool that Liberals and Conservatives use to put their old duffers (and Duffy's) out to pasture with a nice reward. Abolish it!
Postscript:
And if you need further proof about the undemocratic nature of the patronage ridden Senate ... read this!

I have always hated being called an "NDP'er" New Democrat was always my preferred moniker.
I hope I can call myself a "democrat" after the convention!

I totally agree. I also cringe everytime I hear a news reader say ... "the NDP party ...."
Time for change.
