HST - Liberal / Tory ... Same Old Story

Conservative Party of Canada and Liberal Party of Canada VOTE to RAISE taxes in Ontario and British Columbia!

"Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says his caucus is united on the harmonized sales tax, even though several (28!) of his MPs were not in their seats when the votes were cast. (roll your eyes here)

There is a fair bit of mystery in the hallways of the House of Commons as to what exactly happened today.

The government can call a vote on a ways-and-means motion like this one at any time. It did so today around 1:20 p.m., and the official 30 minute countdown clock appeared on the Parliamentary television channel indicating the vote would take place at about 1:50 p.m.

However, the vote took place 10 minutes early, catching many MPs and staffers off guard. Liberals say the Speaker moved up the vote so that it would not interfere with the afternoon Question Period. New Democrat staffers, meanwhile, are whispering conspiracy theories of a Tory-Liberal plot to give certain MPs an excuse for abstaining on an unpopular issue.

The motion passed and will now turn into government legislation, with future votes at second reading, report stage and third reading.

When asked if some of the Liberal MPs abstained on principle, Mr. Ignatieff blamed the absences on the timing and said his caucus will be united on future HST votes."

[With homage to George Orwell] The people outside looked from Conservatives to Liberals, and from Liberals to Conservatives, and from Conservatives to Liberals again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

At least in this province we the people had the good sense in 1991 to vote out the last party that harmonized our taxes. Bring it on Stevie (and your little lickspittle Brad too), just bring it on.

Amen!

The Harperites and the Igginites must formed a coalition in all but name - standing up for big business and standing on Canadians - same old, same old!

Referring to the sign about joining the NDP, hell would freeze over before the NDP were ever elected in Ontario again. Seriously, how can you criticize Grant Devine and defend the fiasco that was the Ontario NDP? What Bob Rae and the NDP did to Ontario was a THOUSAND times worse than Devine and the PCs; at least Devine had heavy oil upgraders, power stations, paper mills, fertilizer plants and new rumpus rooms to show for the billions they rang up, Bob Rae and his cronies had nothing but a depressed economy to show for a debt that was, per tax payer, over double that of Devine's in half the time.
Other than that, Merry Christmas! We really do have to have coffee sometime.

I think Bob Rae has proved sufficiently that he was NOT a New Demcorat! He was (as he is now) a wishy washy Liberal.

You simply can't hang free for all spending on the New Democrats. We balanced budget after budget after budget here in Saskatchewan after the free spending PC's bankrupted the province AND NOW, Wall is proving that his 'pom pom' approach to reading a balance sheet is the same as the people he apprenticed under!

Hope things are well!

Saskatchewan wasn't bankrupt, bad shape, but not bankrupt. The Closest any province is to bankruptcy would be Quebec - over $130 Billion and counting - or BC in the early 1990's.
I think we both agree that deficit spending is stupid, but every party doesn't at one time or another.
