Harper's Hockey Hoopla! Maybe we should remember what he has said about this great nation in the past ...

As Stephen Harper prepares to present himself as Canada's biggest 'fan' later today during the Olympic Hockey Gold medal game, maybe we should take a look at what he has said about this country in the past ... quotes that won't be reported by CTV anytime soon:

"Canada is a Northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term, and very proud of it. Canadians make no connection between the fact that they are a Northern European welfare state and the fact that we have very low economic growth, a standard of living substantially lower than yours, a massive brain drain of young professionals to your country, and double the unemployment rate of the United States."
- Stephen Harper, then vice-president of the National Citizens Coalition, in a June 1997 Montreal meeting of the Council for National Policy, a right-wing American think tank.

"Canada appears content to become a second-tier socialistic country, boasting ever more loudly about its economy and social services to mask its second-rate status, led by a second-world strongman appropriately suited for the task."
- Stephen Harper in his article "It is time to seek a new relationship with Canada," December 12th, 2000.

"Your country [the USA], and particularly your conservative movement, is a light and an inspiration to people in this country and across the world."
-Stephen Harper, then vice-president of the National Citizens Coalition, in a June 1997 Montreal meeting of the Council for National Policy, a right-wing American think tank.

"A culture of defeat..."
- Stephen Harper, describing the Atlantic provinces, May 2001.

"In terms of the unemployed, of which we have over a million-and-a-half, don't feel particularly bad for many of these people. They don't feel bad about it themselves, as long as they're receiving generous social assistance and unemployment insurance."
-Stephen Harper, then vice-president of the National Citizens Coalition, in a June 1997 Montreal meeting of the Council for National Policy, a right-wing American think tank.

"What we clearly need is experimentation with market reforms and private delivery options [in health care]."
- Stephen Harper, then President of the NCC, 2001.

"We also support the exploration of alternative ways to deliver health care. Moving toward alternatives, including those provided by the private sector, is a natural development of our health care system."
- Stephen Harper, Toronto Star, October 2002.

Let's face it, Stephen Harper HATES Canada the way it is!
Go Canada Go!

2010 Winter Olympics Medal Standings

I am not a huge fan of the total amounts of money that are being spent on the Winter Olympics. That being said, I am still recuperating from major eye surgery and am having a hard time navigating cyberspace because of my bad vision. To help me have quick access to the medal standings, I am putting this up so it is easier for me to find it:

Full Text Of Jack Layton's Statement Today

Statement by Jack Layton, delivered to the media today.

Good afternoon. Thank you all for coming.

As some of you may know, I hurt my back last week.

Everyone who leads an active lifestyle knows what it's like to pull a muscle at the gym - it can be pretty painful.

My back is better now, but today I want to let you know about an unrelated health matter.

This year, more than 25,000 Canadian men will be diagnosed with treatable prostate cancer and I have recently learned that I’m one of them.

It’s the same kind of prostate cancer that my father was diagnosed with 17 years ago.

He, like the overwhelming majority of Canadian men with prostate cancer, fought it and won.

His treatments were successful, and I intend to tackle this with the same determination that he did.

Like my dad, I am a fighter. And I will beat this.

My treatment plan is now underway and everything is on track.

In the coming weeks, the schedule of my treatment regime means I may have a bit more time to catch the Olympics.

The hard work and drive of our Canadian athletes will be an inspiration.

I want to assure my constituents and the Canadian public that this will in not impede my ability to serve as either the Member of Parliament for Toronto Danforth or as leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada.

I have an amazing team, great friends and a loving, supportive family.

And my wife Olivia knows a thing or two about taking on cancer, having been diagnosed with thyroid cancer just a few years ago.

She won her battle and so will I.

Recently, the Party marked the 7th anniversary of my becoming leader. Without question we have accomplished much. But we also recognize there is a lot more to do to build a more caring and greener Canada.

And I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves Monday morning and get back at it.

Thank you.

CBC's Clarification On 'Fair Use' Of It's Material And iCopyright Contract Is Even More Unclear Now

CBC's online spokesperson, Chris Ball, has tried to clarify Mothercorp's policy on 'fair use' of their material by bloggers.

We are now more confused than ever. If CBC is happy with that situation, so be it. As a taxpayer who pays for the corp., I am not very satisfied. I have tried to work through this .. but it has given me a headache.

Come on CBC ... clear this up!

CBC NOT Taking Criticism For Copyright Actions Very Well

There was a flurry of progressive blog postings yesterday concerning CBC's arrangement with an American company to sniff out and 'fine' anyone who uses a CBC article on their blog.

A number of individuals posted comments on the CBC Facebook Fanpage yesterday concerning the new policy. Guess what? Every comment of criticism has been removed from the Facebook fansite!

So much for open and honest dialogue with the 'people's broadcaster'!

-If you are interested .. here is a facebook page trying to get CBC's attention ...
