655,000 Iraqi Civilians DEAD since conflict began

On 20 Feb 2003, on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, United States Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld predicted that American forces will "be welcomed as liberators by the Iraqi people"!

Well as it turns out, 655,000 dead Iraqi civilians later, the United States of America is no closer to containing the disaster in that nation. Iraq has degenerated to near civil war and a steady stream of American soldiers keep coming home in coffins.

There is no doubt that responsibility for this disaster lies directly with George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld.

Let's hope that Afghanistan does not prove to be a similar disaster.

BBC
Winnipeg population

Let's just put that into context. According to Statistics Canada, on December 31, 2005 the population of the City of Winnipeg was 650,100.

So from 2003 to 2006, the number of Iraqi civilians killed is greater than the entire population of Winnipeg!

I don't doubt the figures... but do you have a link?

The US reported (was on yahoo news) that 4000 police officers have also died in Iraq.

I'd say that *is* evidence of an already active civil war and near total chaos.

That's one good looking dog!

The BBC story is linked as well as recent census figures for City of Winnipeg.

While many believe (like myself) that Iraq is in civil war, I see that Mr. Bush and Mr. Rumsfeld don't.

This is a tragedy. The number of dead civilians is staggering

Buck,

I'm not trying to prove a point by asking this, but I'm genuinely curious: do you know how many people died under the Saddam regime? Like either by him killing them, or by dieing in the Iran-Iraq war? Anyone know?

Lefty,as much as you hope and pray for civil war in Iraq,it is not civil war that is going on now.Keep saying it over and over and maybe it will eventually be true, then you can say "see I told you".

harbinger - why would I pray and hope for civil war in Iraq? - what a completely mindless rightwing thing to say - very dumb - very adolescent!

pliny - I didn't write the report. The news media carried it - I commented on it. So how many dead by your detailed research?

Pliny, about these 600 people daying a day; yes, in Winnipeg this would pile up, but in Iraq?

1.2 million people die in car accidents every year, globally. Do you see any bodies piling up? Do you question these stats?
