Youtube Exposes LAPD Brutality During Arrest

LOS ANGELES Nov 10, 2006 (AP)— An FBI investigation prompted by video footage of a man being punched repeatedly in the face by police has demonstrated anew the power of the Internet sensation of the year, YouTube.com.

This week, a clip on the post-it-yourself video Web site triggered a police-brutality investigation by the FBI. The footage shows the Aug. 11 arrest of alleged gang member William Cardenas, 24. Two Los Angeles officers can be seen holding him down on a Hollywood street; one punches him several times in the face before they are able to handcuff him.

The Los Angeles Police Department is also investigating the officers' conduct.

Buck,

I saw that on the news... just wild. I couldn't believe it... if only because they had to know someone was filming them from the next plot over.

I have a lot of sympathy for the cops and the TOTAL MENTAL VIOLENT CRAP that they have to deal with daily;

but,

we give them INCREDIBLE powers and tools to keep the peace. Guns, handcuffs, batons, spray, tazers, etc,; they have the power to detain, question and take whatever measures are necessary to do their jobs.

The trade off is ..... they can't do some things like punching people in the face while they are being detained.

I've actually experienced police brutality first hand during protests. It really opened my eyes, I must say.

There has to be more accountability here. There are lots of other videos of similiar stuff on youtube. Many, many other cases just don't get reported.

I don't want to create the impression that I'm cop bashing but really, when is enough enough?

At what point do we say, ok, you've obviously stepped over the line, this may even be routine and widespread and we need to make some systematic changes here to make sure that cops are serving and protecting the public as is their duty?

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll get that for a really long time. The reason? Politics. Despite this video and perhaps a thousand more, people will yell and scream and talk over you and nothing will change.
