Brazilian Rainforest Given Protected Status
A huge swathe of the Brazilian rainforest has been given protected status in an attempt to slow down the rampant deforestation threatening to devastate large parts of the northern Amazon.
Some 15 million hectares of land, an area bigger than Portugal, Denmark and Switzerland combined, was declared a protected area by Para governor Simão Jatene at a ceremony in the city of Belem.
