Phil Edmonston: Passing the torch
Ken from kenoncanpolitics has a great blog post today which connects the NDP win in Outremont this week with the election of Phil Edmonston, the only other New Democrat ever elected to the House of Commons from Quebec.
"Edmonston's advice for growing the (New Democratic) party in Quebec: "Go for the radical middle. Stay away from the crazies, the one-issue candidates or the people who have agendas that are not really agendas mainstream, average Canadians can identify with."

Interesting advice from a guy who went on to quit the party and endorse the Bloc Quebecois in 1993.

I recall at the time, Edmonston, acknowledged that the social policy of the Bloc was very similar to his own and to the NDP - which is correct. However, I acknowledge your comment because the Bloc's policy on Secession from Canada is intolerable to me (and should have been to Phil Edmonston).

Thanks for the plug for my blog. However, I think for Edmonston I am one of the crazies on the radical left. A radical middle for me would be the loss of a beer belly.
