O yea I almost forgot its been 27 years since his death. They always play his Christmas song about world poverty every year about this time. I think thats what the songs about.

I'm not even sure that this is a fair question.
27 years ago, in a small prairie city, there was a local newspaper, and radio (some local) and TV.
I would have heard when I finally heard. That doesn't minimize the loss.
Over 27 years, technological changes mean that we can know much more, (perhaps) out of context, much more quickly.
The details of an incident, however, takes just as long to determine.
