There was mention on Jon Stewart's Daily Show that Edwards' withdrawal is meant to put support behind Obama and help defeat Clinton.
I got the impression that Peggy Noonan seemed to agree with that.

I think you're right. I am surprised that he pulled out before Super Tuesday. Since he has, I think his support will split somewhat but I think the majority will go Obama.
