Alberta NDP Want Auditor To Investigate Ad Agency With Close Ties To Stelmach Campaign Team

Alberta NDP Leader, Brian Mason, has called on the Provincial Auditor General to conduct a special audit of the contract the government has with a company that has extremely close ties to Stelmach's Conservatives.

Barry Styles, a member of Ed Stelmach's 2008 campaign team, is president of the company (Highwood Communications Ltd.) that received $6.4 million of Alberta government business last year, mostly to buy print, radio, TV and Internet advertising for 19 ministries. Over the past 10 years, the company has been paid $41.3 million for similar work, including more than $7.6 million in 2006.

Highwood Communications Ltd. is also owned by Barry Styles, who is listed as a member of the Conservative election campaign team.

This kind of thing happens with every political party that’s in power. Just look at the federal liberals.

WOW... Alberta has a provincial NDP. What they have like 4 seats in the legislature or what?

huff! :(

I didn't say it was good thing Leftdog. I just pointed out that this happens a lot.

And it is NOT a good thing - that is why it should be brought to public attention to be challenged - not 'rationalized' or 'justified' ... because it has happened in other jurisdictions!

One would think that investigation into the government's advertising policies and contracts with agencies would fall into the remit of the Auditor General.

Are you saying that in Alberta, that it doesn't?

Auditors General usually have that remit. Think of the Liberals and the advertising brouhaha that caused problems during the last election.

Any Auditor General who does not have the remit to look into this matter becomes more or less a sock puppet for the government.
