Ontario Moves To Lift Ban On Clotheslines

Outdoor clotheslines are currently banned under some municipal bylaws and contracts with home builders. But Ontario is looking at allowing clotheslines for anyone who lives in a freehold detached, semi-detached or row house where they are not allowed.

Allowing natural forces like the sun and a light breeze to dry clothes makes far more sense than using the electricity that a dryer requires.

From the TO Star:

But home builders are wondering why there's a rush, saying prospective buyers are not pushing for clotheslines. Acknowledging that "clotheslines are good for the environment," an official from the Ontario Home Builders' Association said "most families don't have the time" to hang their laundry out.

"The case we need to present is there are people out there who absolutely detest clotheslines," said association past president Victor Fiume.

"They like the idea that they don't have to look at their neighbour's underwear."

You don't wanna look at yer neighbour's skivvies? Close yer drapes.

I do the washin' in my house ad I don't find it especially time-consuming to hang out the clothes. I used to feel a little un-manly out there in public hangin' out Ma's bras and panties but I got over it.

I'm glad I don't live in such a restrictive community. Talk about a nanny state!

I wonder how a judge would handle a case of a civilly disobedient householder hanging out laundry in spite of a stoopidass law.

When I first heard about the banning of clotheslines some years ago, I thought, well, here is proof the psychos have really taken over. Glad to see this insanity overturned.
