We're seeing this type of extreme weather event across the northern hemisphere while the tropics and southern hemisphere seem to be enduring sustained droughts.

It's now becoming obvious that the loss of the Arctic sea ice and the warming of the Arctic waters is fueling a vastly more powerful polar jet stream that is, in turn, subject to Rossby waves, very slow moving waves that meander deep into the south and into the north.

Look at the floods the Brits have been experiencing. They're now moving into the next stage - recurring massive floods. These destroy buildings and infrastructure which, in Britain, tend to be concentrated in valleys and low-lying points.

Insurance can only make good so many losses before it becomes unfeasible. Private flood insurance in the U.S. is a thing of the past so the government has had to step in to help all those soshulist-hatin' Tea Baggers by providing government flood insurance. Yet those same medicare-lovin' rednecks get indignant when it comes to bailing out the people of New York and New Jersey after hurricane Sandy.
