Former Nazi Officer Faces International Rejection
Former Nazi concentration camp guard Johann Leprich was freed on Monday from an American prison. He was held for deportation, but Federal authorities have failed to find a country willing to take him. Neither Germany, Hungary, nor Romania, his birth-place, accept him.
Leprich joined the Waffen SS in 1943 and served as a guard at Mauthausen in Austria, where about 119,000 were killed. After World War II he immigrated to the U.S. and became a citizen in 1958. He fled to Canada in 1987 when his past was discovered.
The 81-year-old former Nazi concentration camp guard was freed this week from a Michigan jail after US officials failed to locate any country that would take him in. He was released into the custody of his wife and family.
