Condoleezza Rice Thanks Canada

I for one appreciate the fact that Canada received a thank you from the United States of America by way of Condy Rice today in Halifax. In the hours after Nine Eleven, Canadian airports were filled with passengers who had to be grounded as a result of the attacks on New York City and Washington D.C.

Canadians did what good neighbours do in times of crisis and the acknowledgement of that is something that should not be tainted by politics.

Many Canadians remember the false criticism of this country by some americans who insisted that the Nine Eleven terrorists had entered the United States through Canada. Other Canadians remember the criticism that was put on us when we did not engage in the Iraqi conflict. We were called 'Soviet Canukistan' and worse by some american politicians and pundits.

The 'thank you' that Secretary of State Rice brings today, is an acknowledgment of our service as a good neighbour and it is appreciated.

POSTSCRIPT:
"Soviet Canuckistan" is one unflattering epithet for Canada, used by Pat Buchanan on October 31, 2002, on his television show on MSNBC in which he denounced Canadians as anti-American and the country as a haven for terrorists. He was reacting to Canadian criticisms of US security measures regarding Arab Canadians.

Buchanan has a history of unflattering references to Canada, having said in 1990 that if Canada were to break apart due to the failure of the Meech Lake Accord, "America would pick up the pieces." He said two years after that "for most Americans, Canada is sort of like a case of latent arthritis. We really don't think about it, unless it acts up."
